Dungeness Crab
Oregon Dungeness crab is renowned worldwide for its sweet flavor and is highly sought after. You can easily harvest your own along the Oregon coast with minimal gear. Dungeness crab is easily identified by its white-tipped claws and reddish-brown to purple color, distinguishing it from other species like rock crabs.
Habitat
Adult Dungeness crabs feed on various fish and invertebrates and inhabit sandy and muddy areas. They are found in shallow estuaries and can range in depth from the surface down to nearly 1,500 feet.
Crabbing Techniques
Various methods such as crab pots, rings, and rod-cast traps are used for crabbing. While dock crabbing is feasible in coastal bays, a boat extends access to more water. Boats and crab pots can typically be rented from marinas and tackle shops. The abundance of crabs in bays and estuaries correlates with water salinity levels. High river flow from heavy rain events can drive crabs farther into the ocean in search of saltier water.
Regulations
Only male crabs measuring 5-3/4 inches or larger are permissible for retention, necessitating familiarity with crab identification and measurement techniques.
